What is self storage and how does it work?

Self storage gives you a secure, private unit where you can store personal or business belongings for as long as you need, with flexible access. You can see pictures of our storage units on our website and on our social media profiles.

Who uses self storage?

Our customers include homeowners (for times when they are moving, renovating or decluttering their houses) and a wide variety of local businesses needing space for stock, tools or equipment.

Can I view the storage units before booking?

Yes. You’re welcome to visit and view the facility during office hours before committing. Please contact us to organise your visit so we can make sure someone is available to show you around. Our normal office hours are 8am – 5pm, Monday to Friday. Our customers have access to their units 7am-7pm, 7 days a week.

How quickly can I move in?

In most cases, you can move in as soon as you’ve selected your unit and set up payment, subject to availability. Many customers move in the same day as booking their unit, but you can book and reserve a unit in advance too.

Unit Sizes & Usage

What size storage unit do I need?

This depends on what you’re storing and whether it is for your own personal use, or being used for your business. It can be easy to underestimate the space needed, so we have provided a simple and free size estimator tool you can use. Click here to estimate how much space you will need.

Can I change unit size later?

Yes. You can move to a larger or smaller unit if your needs change (subject to availability). Please contact us to make the arrangements.

Are the storage units empty or fitted with shelves?

All units are empty so you can organise them however suits you best. If you need to fit any shelving or storage, please discuss this with us first so we can help you find the best way to do this.

Can I modify my self-storage unit?

No. Customers are not permitted to paint or in any other way decorate or make alterations to, or attach anything to, the internal or external surfaces of the unit they are renting. If there is something else you would like to do, please contact us to discuss this.

Can I run a business or workshop from my unit?

No, the units are for storage only and cannot be used as offices, gyms, workshops, or business premises. We do have many businesses that use our storage facilities to help them free up space in their main premises, or even enabling them to run their business from home.

Are there any toilets on your self storage site?

Yes, we have a toilet on site for customer use.

Can I bring my pet with me to the storage unit?

For the safety and security of other customers and staff, only guide dogs can accompany customers into our self-storage facility.

What happens if I damage the self-storage unit?

You must maintain the unit by ensuring it is kept clean and in a state of good repair. In the event of unreasonable uncleanliness of, or damage to, the unit or facility by the customer, Securus Self Storage are entitled to retain the deposit and charge the reasonable costs of cleaning repairs, replacement, etc.

How much does self storage cost in Horsham?

Yes, our minimum rental period is 8 weeks.

How do payments work?

All storage costs are billed in advance on a regular 4-week cycle, making it easy to manage your costs. Payments are collected from your authorised credit or debit card by default. If you want to discuss any other payment method, please contact us.

Do you offer discounts or promotions?

What identity documents do I need to provide for verification?

Our online booking system deals with all identification. You will need to have available an official document with your photograph such as a driving license or passport.

If you are a business customer and you are a company director or senior manager, you will also need to provide proof of your position such as a business card or an official letter from Companies House. If you are a business customer but are not a company director or senior manager, you will need to provide a letter from the business to confirm that you have the authority to act on their behalf to enter into the license agreement with Securus Self Storage.

What happens if I change my address and / or contact details?

As a customer of our self-storage units in Horsham, you will need to let us know using the online customer portal, or by notifying us in writing, of any change of your address, phone numbers or email address, or those of your ‘Alternate Contact Person’ within 14 days of the change taking place.

Security & Access

How secure are the storage units?

Our facility has secure perimeter fencing with access controlled gates in use at all times when the site is not staffed. There is site-wide CCTV coverage and this is fully monitored, to keep you and your belongings safe.

Who can access my unit?

Only you (and anyone you authorise) can access your unit.

Who is responsible for locking my self storage unit?

You are responsible for ensuring your unit it is locked at all times when you are not in the unit. Securus Self Storage are not responsible for locking any unit which the customer leaves unlocked at any time.

What are your access hours? Can I access my unit anytime?

Access to our site is available for customers 7am-7pm, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. When you move into your unit, you will be provided with your own personal site access code.

Do I need to bring my own lock?

No. Locks are provided by us. These locks are designed specifically to be used with the storage units.

What You Can (and Can’t) Store

What items can I store?

You can store most household, business, and personal items such as furniture, boxes, equipment, and stock.

What items are not allowed in storage?

For safety and legal reasons, you cannot store:

  • Food or perishable goods, unless securely packed so they are protected from, and do not attract, vermin
  • Any living creatures (including reptiles, fish, etc.)
  • Combustible or flammable substances such as gas, paint, petrol, oil, cleaning solvents or compressed gases
  • Firearms, explosives, weapons or ammunition of any type
  • Chemicals, radioactive materials, biological agents, toxic waste, asbestos or other hazardous or potentially hazardous substances
  • Any item that emits fumes or odours
  • Any illegal item, or substances or goods illegally obtained, such as illicit (counterfeit / smuggled) tobacco or alcohol, unlicensed or unsafe goods (such as toys, electrical goods, medicines, aerosols, cosmetics, fireworks, etc.)
  • Goods which are environmentally harmful or that are a risk to the property of any person
  • Currency, deeds and securities
  • Items which are unique in nature and / or where the value to the customer cannot be assessed on a financial basis

Moving In & Using Your Unit

Can you accept deliveries for me?

No, you (or someone you authorise) must handle deliveries and access to your unit.

Do you offer help with moving or van hire?

We work with a local removal and moving partner who can help with this. Please contact the office for details.

Do you provide trolleys or equipment?

Our units are all drive up units – you can park your car or van right next to your unit so trolleys or moving equipment are not generally required. If you require specialist equipment to you’re your items, you will need to provide this.

Rules & Responsibilities

Do I need insurance for my stored items?

Yes. Your existing insurance policy is unlikely to cover items stored away from your home or business premises. We offer a simple insurance option as part of the booking process.

Can I live or sleep in a storage unit?

No, units cannot be used as living accommodation under any circumstances.

Can I dispose of rubbish at the site?

No, you must remove any unwanted items or waste yourself.

Do units have electricity or power?

Our standard units do not have power, but this can be provided at an extra cost. Please contact us to discuss your requirements if you require electricity for your storage unit.

Miscellaneous

Do storage auctions happen if units are abandoned?

No. The popular programmes that you see on televisions about abandoned storage units and storage auctions are generally contrived and simply made for the cameras. People bidding for the contents of storage units that they have not seen is pretty much a myth.

Do you offer specialist storage (e.g. wine storage)?

Wine requires very specialist storage conditions and our units are not designed for this. If you are unsure whether a particular item could safely be stored, please ask us for advice.
